Hiring the right CTO can make or break a company especially in VC or PE-backed businesses where the pressure to scale quickly is real and mis-hires are costly. Yet too often, the process is rushed, misjudged or handed off without the proper structure in place. To get to the heart of what works (and what doesnt), I spoke with Gareth Thomas, previously CTO at segmentation SaaS platform PeakData, and Geraldine Butler-Wright, a seasoned chief people and culture officer with experience at PayPal and various successful scaleups. Combined with our extensive executive search experience from 20 years helping dozens of growth-stage companies build out senior tech teams. From job descriptions that actually attract the right candidates, to avoiding the CTO unicorn trap here are eight lessons for hiring a CTO that can actually deliver at your stage of growth.1 The job description what to include?A great job description should fit onto one page and answer four things:What is the job and how m...

Todays budget is a cautious and responsible response to the cost-of-living pressures facing voters. As noted ahead of budget night, many of the major spending initiatives had already been announced. But, in the only major surprise, there are income tax cuts for all income taxpayers. Even if we need to be patient. The new tax cuts only start in July 2026, with a second round in July 2027.And as Treasurer Jim Chalmers himself said, they are modest cuts. A worker on average earnings will receive A$268 in the first year, rising to $536 in the second year.Combined with the governments first round of tax cuts in last years budget, this will add up to $2,190 per year in 2027.The cost to the budget of the latest tax cuts in 2026-27 will be $3 billion, and over three years will be $17.1 billion. The cuts still need to pass parliament. But calls by economists such as Chris Richardson and Ken Henry for major tax reform have not been heeded. Major reforms inevitably create losers as well as winn...

In a new interview with Australia's "Everblack" podcast, former FEAR FACTORY singer Burton C. Bell was asked if he is planning to attend Ozzy Osbourne's final concert with BLACK SABBATH in July at the Villa Park in Birmingham, United Kingdom. He responded (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET): "Unfortunately, no. I couldn't afford to go. But I wish I could be there. It's gonna be fantastic."I was on a magazine cover twice with Ozzy, and I've got both of 'em here [at my house]," Burton continued. "One of 'em is signed by Ozzy, which is killer. And I remember standing while BLACK SABBATH was playing. Henry Rollins was there, and I'm standing next to this tall dude. I'm, like, looking up. I'm, like, 'It's fucking [QUEEN's] Brian May. Holy fuck. I'm standing next to Brian May. Holy fuck.'Bell added that opening for B...
