The Liberals continue to lead the federal election race at the halfway point of the campaign, a new poll suggests, but the Conservatives have narrowed the gap.The latest Ipsos poll exclusively for Global News shows 42 per cent of Canadians surveyed would vote for the Liberals, down four points from last week and the first time since the election began that the party has lost ground. The Conservatives are up two points at 36 per cent.Whatever momentum the Liberals have had has declined, said Darrell Bricker, CEO of Ipsos Public Affairs.Its been the only good news that the Conservatives have had since Mark Carney became the leader of the Liberal Party. Whether it will hold up or not is another question.Eleven per cent of decided voters surveyed said they would back the New Democrats, down one point from last week. The Green Party also fell one point, to two per cent, while the Bloc Quebecois stayed steady at six per cent support nationally, or 25 per cent of Quebec voters.Story co...

Concern over asbis after report finds people jailed for sleeping rough and feeding birds

Almost 250 people have been imprisoned for breaching antisocial behaviour injunctions (asbis) since 2020, with people being jailed for sleeping rough, begging, feeding birds and making a noise.Analysis from academics at the universities of York and Coventry found that out of 242 cases examined from 2020-2024, there were 72 cases of imprisonment for general nuisance, 61 for abusive language and 51 for noise.They found that 57% of people did not have legal representation at the breach hearing that led to their imprisonment: out of 97 recorded cases, 55 defendants were not represented.People are not getting proper representation and they get sent to prison for sometimes long periods, weeks and months. Theres no sentencing guidance for this, said Prof Caroline Hunter from York Law School. People might have a lot of issues that need to be dealt with, but theyre not dealt with by sending them to prison.An asbi is a civil injunction used to tackle antisocial behaviour, and can be issued...
